Success is NOT an option, If Practice isn’t THE option

Success is NOT an option, If Practice isn’t THE option

2. Make Practice a Praxis

Practice Practice Practice because practice makes perfect! That may sound a bit cliché, but it’s the truth. Just like with anything else that requires practice, such as basketball, football, golf, dancing… ACTING is the same! Anytime you have a chance to be alone and work on different monologs and scenes, do it. Many beginning actors and actresses seem to try to get into character once an audition comes along or just when they feel inspired, but I’m here to tell you, it takes more than that. Work on the big things all the way down to the little ones. For instance, yes tone and having motion is important, but pay attention to details like facial expressions, where your eyes are, and where your mind is supposed to be. Allow yourself to read the scene fully and try to grasp what’s actually going on. This way, when you start acting it out, you know what emotion the scene is trying to evoke and you can emulate that.

Take pride in your work!

After thoroughly reading the scene and understanding the dialogue, choose how you think your character should be. Defend the position you chose to take with a character. Yes, take constructive criticism, but also have an individual mind and if your acting differs from what the director originally wanted, have an explanation as to why you chose to act that way. Sometimes, the director may take your thoughts into consideration and alter his or her ideas. Boom! You are showing the director that you will add value to their work. Adversely, if he or she doesn’t like your idea, take their advice and change. This doesn’t mean you failed, but rather shows the director you have creative ideas as an actor.
The take home message? Practice whenever and for how ever long you can.
Make time for acting, because the only way to become a successful actor is to…PRACTICE!!!!!

What other practice strategies do you use when acting?
